Coiled garden hoses: advantages and disadvantages

Some people don’t think much of things like a garden hose, but if this is something you use regularly during the growing season, it’s worth some thought. Anything that is used on a regular basis can make small day-to-day jobs easier or more difficult depending on the design of that item. A garden hose is one of these things.

While the familiar green version is an old standby for many, there are other options available, one of which is the coiled garden hose. A coiled hose looks a bit like an old-fashioned coiled telephone cord. For many it is a fun change from the old system, however it has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Advantage

One of the fun things about this type of garden hose is that it comes in a variety of fun and bright colors like blue, purple, or even translucent yellow.

While color can be fun, it won’t or shouldn’t be the main reason for choosing this style of water hose. The main benefit of a helical hose is that it is quite small, but it will stretch as you need an additional length and then fall back to its normal shape when you are done using it. It basically retracts on its own after use, so there is no need to spend more time carefully rolling it up for storage after each use.

They are also light but durable. Many of them withstand the sun well, are resistant to abrasion and do not kink.

Disadvantages

Probably the biggest downside to coiled hoses is that they are not as multi-functional as the more familiar style. They work best for smaller spaces like patios or balconies. If you have a large patio, this style may work well for your patio, but probably not for all of your watering needs.

Because they don’t rest on the ground like a normal hose, they can also have a tendency to crash or knock over taller pots or plants.

A coiled hose works well for certain jobs and spaces, but may not be one size for all types of garden hose. Before making a final decision, think about how you use this garden tool the most to see if this style would be a good fit for you.
