Three Uses of a Forklift on a Farm

Have you considered using a forklift on a farm, perhaps on your farm? There are a number of uses for a forklift on a farm, and here are three of them:

1. Barrels of hay

The most common use of a forklift on a farm is to lift, transport, and transport hay, both bales of hay and barrels of hay, the latter of which can sometimes weigh up to 2,000 pounds. For these large, heavy barrels of hay, lifting is nearly impossible without the use of heavy-duty machinery that can handle the bulk of the load. Forklifts work great for this purpose, allowing farmers to lift, transport, and transport hay bales and hay barrels from one location to another. Forklifts not only help farmers move hay bales and barrels with ease, but also quickly.

There are different ways to move hay using a forklift. Some farmers “sink” the forks directly into the hay bale or barrel, but this method generally damages the hay and is not recommended. Other farmers use the forklift to lift the hay with ropes after tying the hay to the forks. Another method is to build a forklift attachment, mounting a metal plate to the forks to create a sturdy platform for the hay, making the process of lifting, loading and hauling much simpler.

2. Lift and move heavy items

Forklifts can also be used on a farm to lift, transport, and transport a wide variety of common large and heavy items, plus hay bales and barrels. Such items may include:

farm equipment

large or heavy farm tools and supplies

smaller machine parts

produce

animal feed

bulk bags

Fencing

dead animals

3. Trailer

Finally, you can use a forklift on a farm to not only lift and move items, but also to tow (pull or drag) them. The trailer would be used for objects or loads that are too large or too heavy to be lifted safely by the forklift. Forklifts can be used to tow trailers, tractors, other vehicles, machinery, large and/or very heavy equipment, and very large loads.

Please note that proper procedures and safety precautions must be followed to prevent damage to the forklift, prevent damage to large items being towed, and prevent accidents and injuries. For example, suitable tow ropes should be used, but they should never be attached to the mast to pull or haul loads. In addition, the proper accessories must be installed and used in order for the forklift to be used for safe towing or pushing.

The right forklift

If you don’t already own a forklift but are interested in buying, renting or borrowing a new or used forklift to use on your farm, it’s important to do your research to find out what type you’ll need. Some manufacturers have forklifts specially designed for farm use. You’ll also need to consider what you’ll be using the forklift for (see uses above), especially before spending your money on a new forklift.

Forklift Safety

It’s also critical to consider safety when using a forklift on your farm; in fact, security should be one of your top priorities. If you are going to be the one driving the forklift, you must first become certified to operate a forklift, if you are not already certified. Only those who are certified to drive a forklift are required to operate one. Also, if there are children and/or animals on the farm, it is extremely important to be alert and aware. Unfortunately, forklift-related accidents do happen, but they can be prevented by following safety precautions.
