Walking the beaches of Mumbai

Mumbai tourism is not only famous for its ancient caves, monuments, art galleries, restaurants, suburbs and Mumbai venues but is also popular for Mumbai beaches. Situated on the western coast of the Indian subcontinent, Mumbai has a good number of beaches. However, most of them are usually overcrowded and get dirty thanks to the crowd. The less explored ones are better and cleaner, and are also kept spotless and clear. One can visit the lively beaches of Mumbai as well as go to the more remote secluded ones, whatever the fancy takes.

Most of these ocean shorelines are good for sandy walks, while very few are good for swimming. Here are some of the ones that are suggested for tourists by Mumbai tourism.

1. Juhu Beach – This is not just one of the beaches in Mumbai, but it is a landmark in itself. At night it gets very crowded, mostly families with children. In the main part of this beach, one would find a number of food stalls selling delicious local snacks and fruit juices. Alcohol on the beaches is prohibited in Mumbai, so it is nowhere to be found. Many street vendors frequently walk the beaches to sell colorful toys and balloons. Here one would find many good hotels facing the sea.

2. Chowpatty Beach: Located towards the north end of Marine Drive in the metropolitan area, it is a hotspot for most young people and families. It also witnesses a large flow of tourists. This well-maintained place has many stalls selling soft drinks, snacks, and sweet meats. It has also been a shooting location for many Hindi movies in the past; if one is lucky, one may get to see a shooting in progress here.

3. Gorai Beach: It is located in the northwestern part of Mumbai. To get here, you have to take a ferry across Manori Creek. The best thing about this beach is that it does not get too crowded and is therefore cleaner than the other Mumbai beaches in this area. Although on weekends, a lot of people come here, so it would be better to visit during the week. Here one can jump into the sea and swim a bit, the restaurants here serve excellent seafood and other local delicacies.

4. Marve Beach: Located in the western suburbs of Malad in Mumbai, this is a good place to come for some sun and sand. However, the beach is absolutely dangerous due to sinking sand, as well as strong underwater currents. There are numerous villas besides the beach along the way, which are owned by the wealthy inhabitants of the city. To get to Marve beach you can take auto rickshaw or taxi.

5. Aksa Beach: It is the cleanest beach in Mumbai because it is visited by very few people. There are many nearby resorts to spend the night if one wishes to spend the weekend here. Venturing too far into the waters is not recommended as many people have drowned here in the past.
